History of SQL

Initially created in the 1970s, SQL became the de facto standard programming language for relational databases after they emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. What is SQL?

  1. SQL stands for Structured Query Language

Why SQL?

SQL is used for :

  • execute queries against a database
  • retrieve data from a database
  • insert records

How to use SQL?

In order to use SQL in a website that fetches data from the website, the following prerequisites are required:

  1. RDBMS ( Relational Database Management System ) Program . Like : MySQL, MSAccess, PostgreSQL  and many more
  2. Server Side scripting language like PHP or ASP
  3. SQL commands
  4. HTML/CSS to rendering and styling.

RDBMS stands for Relational Database Management System and is the basis for SQL and all modern databases. Data stored in RDBMS are in the form of tables, further classified into rows and columns.

Some most used RDBMS are MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, Oracle, MySQL, and Microsoft Access. we will continue this series of SQL using MySQL servers.

# Commands and Syntax

SQL commands are a set of instructions that communicates with the database and performs specific tasks or functions. Operations like create a table, add data to tables, drop the table, modify the table, set permission for users. There are 5 types of SQL commands, which you can read here in detail.
